I'm a nurse and I don't do night shifts. The few times I did it I earned a 150% differential but it's not worth the money: I'd go back home and have to use noise cancelling headphones to sleep, 'cause people are loud, I'd wake up rested at 04:00 pm, but completely destroying my circadian rhythm. I'd need a whole day or 2 to recover my regular rhythm because otherwise I'd be a zombie.

I'm not in the US, but it seems to me that the Republicans keep breaking norms and procedures, including politicising impeachment and ignoring illegal, immoral and plain bad conduct.

US question, but why don't Democrats just vote for impeachment basically every day? Whether it's for the Jack Smith findings, the unwillingness to hold up the 14th amendment, whatever. Like, is there a statute of limitations for impeachment? Is there a limited number of crimes valid for it?

Would it be correct to say that a 3.5/5 movie rating on a 0.5/5 scale isn't exactly the same as a 7/10 rating on a 0.5/10 scale, even though it seems like it mathematically? The reason is that half a star on the 5-point scale visually represents less than a full point on the 10-point scale. So, while a great scene might earn you a half-point bump, it wouldn’t necessarily add a full point on the 10-point scale. If rated on a 10-point scale, it’d probably be closer to a 6.5, which converts to 3.25/5 or simply 3/5 on the 0.5/5 scale. This shows that converting ratings to different scales don't always align perfectly with your intended rating.

I still haven't decided on whether top, hot or scaled is the best sort. I feel like all of them feels "wrong" somehow. Any ideas?

I commented something that I later found out was false. No one corrected me until after I googled what I had written to find out it had a logical fallacy. Not only did it get almost 100 replies, but it is growing in the thousands of upvotes. It's also a comment that got the most attention in a while, for me.

I think not living is better than growing up neglected with only bullying as love. It's better to not live than to watch your relatives live real lives while you sit in a corner playing a video game so you're out of sight. It's better to not live than to have everyone in your family hate you for being dependent, but also hate you when you ask for help on being independent. It's just not a life worth living for both parties. The real relatives deserve real lives that doesn't involve taking care of some burden nobody wants, and the other shouldn't live as a burden nobody wants. So many unwanted kids are put in group homes where they stagnate more solely because their parents didn't want to try raising them. Death is better than living in prison for being unwanted.

Title pretty much says it all. I just got accepted for a new job at a new employer and they're going to be running a check on my driving record. However my liscense is expiring shortly so I want to get it renewed. Ideally I want to get it renewed before I actually start the new job because once I start I will be working durring DMV hours. As an Asian American (Chinese Ancestry), I rarely have interactions with law enforcement, except that one school fight which I got arrested because I defended myself against a bully, which I still resent them for (both the law enforcement and school administration). This in a blue city btw. While the cops never *physically* done anything like torture or anything, getting held at the police station for a few hours felt like *psychological* torture. I was just wondering, would my experience have been worse if I were some other race? (I mean like: if I were black, would I have gotten beaten by the cops?)

I’m sure there are a few hurdles, but wondering what is the biggest reason that keeps us back at this moment as the most pressing thing. Is it that the technology just isn’t there yet? Not here on Lemmy, but I've definitely seen some examples in the last few days that made me a little uncomfortable in other places online.

I saw a comment yesterday about how IT admins have to restrict the privileges of other developers on their machines and was surprised by knowing this. I simply thought that employees in the software industry were essentially at equal parity in terms of their departments, and that the admin department was there just to centralise all the work done by other departments and keep track of the status of their systems. I did not think there would be a need to apply childlocks on other employees' systems as I assumed that a person working at an industry like this would have basic computer literacy to know what is safe and permissible by company policy to execute and what is not.
